Tour The Thaw Conservation Center and meet with conservators to discuss ongoing projects 	 	The NYU/Institute of Fine Arts Conservation Center was founded in 1960 and is the oldest degree-granting conservation program in North America, located in the specially designed facilities of the Stephen Chan House, which provide modern and flexible laboratory, library, and classroom spaces that were purpose-built for conservation training. Dedicated to the study of the technology and conservation of works of art and historic artifacts, it prepares students for careers in conservation through a four year program that combines practical experience in conservation with historical, archaeological, curatorial, and scientific studies of the materials and construction of works of art. 	 	The Thaw Conservation Center at the Morgan Library & Museum, is an award-winning world-class laboratory for the conservation of works on paper and parchment-- drawings, prints, illuminated manuscripts, rare books, fine bindings, and literary, historical, and musical manuscripts-- as well as a place for conservation studies. Opened in February 2002, it occupies the entire 5,600-square-foot fourth floor of the historic Morgan House. Designated areas accommodate wet and dry conservation treatments, book conservation, matting and framing, advanced seminars, graduate internships, postgraduate fellowships, and visiting scholars. 	 	Hannelore Roemich, Institute of Fine Arts Professor of Conservation Science, earned her Ph.D. in 1987 from Universitaet Heidelberg (Germany), Chemie Diplom 1984 University of Dortmund (Germany). Dr. Roemich’s research interests include: non-destructive testing of art objects, including CT (computed tomography) and other imaging techniques, indoor environment, evaluation of pollutants and lighting conditions in museums, glass and enamels, and active and preventive 	conservation issues. Dr. Roemich has earned honors including a 1987/1988 CNRS post-doctoral research grant, University of Montpellier, France, the 2003 Pan-European Grand Prix of Innovation, and the 2004 ICCROM Fellowship, Rome.
