MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

The Appraisers Association of America is an international organization based in New York City with the majority of its members located in New York City, as well as in cities, large and small, across the country, and in Canada, Europe, and Asia. Although multi-disciplinary by charter, the majority of AAA members are personal property appraisers specializing in one or more of fifty-three Areas of Specialization. Members provide appraisals for purposes of insurance, estate tax, charitable donation, equitable distribution, liquidation, purchase, and sale. The Appraisers Association of America provides a wide range of programs and services for its members including ongoing professional development and educational programming as well as opportunities to network.

The Process
AAA members are members in one of two categories: Certified Member and Member. For aspiring appraisers and those with an avid interest in the field of appraising, the AAA offers Student Affiliate and Friends of the AAA memberships. Two categories require review by the Admissions Committee:

Member
For those with a minimum of 5 years experience as appraisers.

Certified Member
Those admitted at the Member level may apply later to become Certified Members, the highest level of membership.

Student Affiliate memberships are available for those enrolled in an appraisal studies or art history program and do not require review by the Admissions Committee. Friends of the AAA memberships are available for those with an avid interest in appraising.

To initiate the application process for the Member level, candidates should fill out the Membership Application and return to the Association office. Upon receipt and review of this form, which asks for references in addition to general information about your background and expertise, as well sample appraisals, you will be contacted by the AAA to discuss your application and assist you in the process.

The entire process can take up to six months and includes posting of your name on a list of applicants which is distributed to the membership; the Association reserves the right to withhold an invitation to become a member. The final step is a review by the Admissions Committee of your entire application package. Please note that once you initiate the application process, you must submit all materials within a period of one year.
