NOTES & LETTERS Letter from the Editor
By Daile Kapan, AAA
Welcome to the Appraisers Association of America's E-Newszine, our inaugural online publication. With the vast reach of the internet, this first electronic version highlights an easy-to-read template that is chock-a-block with information vital to the changing world of appraising.
There's a wonderful article about Patsy Cline by pop culture specialist Brian Cummings and a topical update about the Dali market by the doyen of the fine art market, Alex Rosenberg. Although the instability of the marketplace provides endless fodder for journalists, as appraisers we recognize it also presents unique opportunities for collectors. In my interview with Nigel Freeman, Swann Auction Galleries' African-American Fine Art expert, he describes this emerging and exciting market. Given the fluctuations in the marketplace, appraisal services are more necessary than ever. Edward Yee writes about the need for clients to revisit insurance appraisals, in particular.
The AAA continues to offer a variety of marvelous events and activities, which are free to members. Beth Weingast reports on the Roundtables, informal seminars where substantive topics are discussed. And Harmon Johnson's humorous contribution, "How I Got My Start in the Business" is our latest feature. I invite all members to share their own personal stories.
Today the value of being associated with an organization like the AAA is more important than ever. Its high level of professionalism, free exchange of information and strong collegiality represents the best aspects of why networks work. Like any not-for-profit, the AAA reflects the core values of its constituency.
Log on the AAA's website regularly where calendar listings, fast-breaking news, and the events will be updated continually. Past issues of the newsletter will also be accessible to members.
Letter from the President
By Roslyn Bakst Goldman, AAA
President, AAA, July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2009
Greetings:
The year 2009 is a new era in America and not an easy one for many. However, AAA continues to work actively in creative ways to promote the profession of appraisal practice and to educate the public about the role of the appraiser.
We are proud of the new project initiated by our foundation. The project will help small museums and historic houses receive appraisal and collection management services in order to preserve and protect the objects important to our national heritage. The committee researching the methodology for this task is conducting inquiries into related projects, funding sources, and working on a system for the selection of institutions receiving these services. We will keep you posted on our progress. Please send thoughts and ideas to the AAA office.
Our affiliation with NYU is stronger than ever and we are in the process of organizing new services for our members. A number of our members are taking NYU training courses for on-line teaching so that we may deliver course work to you via the computer. This program as well as the NYU Appraisal Certificate course will be AAA' s exclusive project and will help to educate appraisers in the convenience of their own homes. Watch for announcements.
Our annual Conference is set for November 6th and 7th with a Law Day program to follow on November 8th. This is an opportunity to learn the proposed IRS rules changes, to hear the new developments in appraisal practice, and to network with colleagues. We learn from each other and the Conference is a gathering of diverse talents willing to help colleagues with answers to questions and eager to provide advice on appraisal situations.
Most important is the need to fulfill your membership obligation to become USPAP certified. It is a requirement for membership and we have been working to provide the course across the country. To insure your status as a member in good standing, please arrange to take the course and exam keeping your membership current.
I look forward to seeing you at the Conference and at the many AAA programs and courses. We want to hear from you so keep your suggestions coming.
