AFFILIATED PROGRAMS

New York University
The Appraisers Association of America is affiliated with New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) offering a Certificate in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts. The Appraisal Studies Program at NYU is one of the most important training grounds for appraisers beginning their careers and is frequently a critical step in becoming a member of the Appraisers Association of America.

AAA’s affiliation with SCPS offers students the following advantages: upon successful completion of SCPS’s Certificate in Appraisal Studies, the Appraisers Association of America will credit students with up to two years of work experience and exempts them from the Theory and Methodology section of the Appraisers Association of America Certification Examination. Additionally, the Appraisers Association of America recognizes the completion of individual courses as re-certification points for Certified Members. Students enrolled in the SCPS Appraisal Studies Program are eligible to become Student Affiliates of the Appraisers Association of America by paying a $75 fee. In addition, those participating in the program will learn from experienced appraisers because many of AAA’s members teach in the NYU SCPS Program.

The Certificate in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts is awarded to those who successfully complete six required courses and four 10-session electives. The required courses to be taken in the following order are: Essentials of Appraising/X03.8659; The Heart of the Matter: Legal and Ethical Aspects of Appraising/X03.8604; IRS Legal Guidelines in Valuation of Fine and Decorative Arts/Xo0.9515; Research Methods for Appraisers/X03.9522; Appraisal Writing Workshop/X03.9675; and Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice/X03.9503. Some of the numerous specialized electives include: Case Studies in Damage and Loss, General Household Appraising, and Three Centuries of American Furniture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others.

SCPS also offers numerous excellent appraisal studies conferences throughout the year and participation can count towards Appraisal Studies electives.

Further information on the Appraisal Studies Program is available at www.scps.nyu.edu. Please feel free as well to contact AAA with any questions or comments regarding our affiliation with NYU. 212.889.5404, x11.

Professional Development Program
In 2002, the Appraisers Association of America began offering appraisal students an opportunity to participate in a Professional Development Program (PDP). This program is designed to allow candidates and others interested in the field to work with established appraisers in developing their skills in dealing with and arriving at correct values and in perfecting their skills in producing properly written appraisal reports which meet current legal and professional requirements.

Eligibility
Anyone with a professional interest in appraising is eligible to participate in the program. Trainees are matched with appropriate mentors selected from the AAA Board of Directors and AAA membership. Preference will be given to those potential trainees who have completed the USPAP 15-hour course and examination and/or to those who have completed the NYU Certificate in Appraisal Studies. However, it is acceptable to apply at any time during the period that applicants are completing these requirements to allow time to place trainees with appropriate mentors.

Duration of the Program
The Professional Development Program will be available on a rolling admissions basis for four-month sessions beginning on the first of any desired month.

Application to the Program
All those wishing to participate should submit a letter or form including their contact information, desired areas of specialization and a brief resume and transcript (if applicable) of NYU Appraisal Studies courses or other related education to the AAA Professional Development Program. Click here to download a pdf application.

Program Registration and Cost
Once an application has been received, applicants will be matched with mentors in their areas of interest subject to availability and location. Once a mentor and applicant have agreed to work together and upon the AAA’s receipt of the $400 program fee, the applicant will be registered by the AAA as a participant for the four-month.

PDP and Candidate Status in the AAA
This program evolved based on the need for students to have opportunities to gain experience writing appraisals in their specific market of interest with access to a mentor who can provide market insights on how to arrive at current and accurate values. Applicants are encouraged to work on appraisal reports which will serve as their required appraisals for the AAA admissions process.
